Why false ceilings matter
A false ceiling does three things: it conceals wiring and AC ducts, it creates zones and height variation that make a space feel designed, and it carries the lighting plan. In our experience, the ceiling is the single upgrade that most transforms how a room photographs and lives — yet clients often treat it as an afterthought.
Material options
Gypsum board (drywall)
The most popular material in modern Indian homes. A trained carpenter can achieve complex forms — coffers, curves, coves — with gypsum. It takes paint perfectly and holds screws for fixtures. Moisture resistance varies by board grade; use moisture-resistant (MR) gypsum in kitchens and bathrooms.
POP (Plaster of Paris)
The traditional choice. POP is more labour-intensive and relies heavily on the plasterer's skill for a smooth finish. It is less forgiving of humidity changes (can crack). Still widely used for cornices and small decorative elements. Do not use POP for large flat areas in humid climates.
Combination
Most of our ceiling designs use gypsum as the structural element and POP for decorative profiles and corner trims. This gives the best of both: accuracy and detail.
Design patterns and what they cost
- Flat ceiling (just painting): ₹15–₹30 per sqft
- Simple perimeter cove with LED strip: ₹80–₹120 per sqft
- Coffered ceiling (recessed panels): ₹150–₹250 per sqft
- Multi-level with spots + cove: ₹180–₹300 per sqft
- Complex curves / medallions: ₹250–₹450 per sqft
The lighting plan comes first
This is our most important piece of advice: finalise your lighting layout before the ceiling framework goes up. Adding a downlight or a spotlight after the gypsum is installed means cutting holes and patching — it looks messy and costs extra. We always sit with clients to map out every light source before Day 1.
Height requirements
A false ceiling typically drops 8–12 inches from the structural slab. For this to work comfortably, you need a finished floor-to-ceiling height of at least 9.5 ft (2.9 m). Below that, skip the false ceiling or limit it to a perimeter cove — a full drop ceiling in a low room makes the space feel compressed.
