Vastu and interior design: what we tell our clients
At Marvel Homes, we work across Vadodara, Ahmedabad and Surat — cities where Vastu is a genuine consideration for most families. We respect that and we have learned, across hundreds of projects, which Vastu principles have a real, practical effect on how a home feels to live in — and which are worth adapting creatively when the layout does not permit the ideal.
The kitchen: most asked-about room
The recommended direction for cooking is east or south-east (agni corner). Practically, this means:
- Position the cooktop so the person cooking faces east or south.
- Avoid placing the kitchen directly above or below a toilet — this is the one we take seriously for structural planning.
- If the kitchen is in the north-west (which is common in modern flats), a south-facing cooktop within that kitchen is still the right move.
Master bedroom placement
South-west is considered the most stable direction for the master bedroom and the head of the bed ideally faces south. In practice, sleeping with the head towards the south does correlate with better sleep quality — the Earth's magnetic field flows south to north and some research supports alignment with it.
Living room: the north or east rule
A north or east-facing living room maximises natural light during the day. Light is not just good for wellbeing — it makes a space feel larger and reduces reliance on artificial light. If your drawing room faces west, heavy drapes and a light colour palette compensate effectively.
What to do when the layout does not comply
Most 2BHK and 3BHK flats built after 2010 are designed by builders who do not consult Vastu architects. A north-facing toilet or an east-facing master bedroom is extremely common. Our advice:
- Use colour and light to shift the energy of a room — dark colours in the north or east absorb light and can be balanced with warm artificial lighting.
- A Vastu consultant can suggest small remedies (crystals, plants, mirror placement) that do not require structural changes.
- Focus your structural Vastu budget on the kitchen and master bedroom — these two rooms have the most daily impact.
Vastu is ultimately about living well. A home with excellent light, good ventilation and thoughtful layout will feel right — regardless of whether every detail ticks every traditional box.
