The core difference
Sliding wardrobes have two or more panels that glide on a track system. Hinged wardrobes have individual doors that swing open. Both can be floor-to-ceiling. Both can use the same internal fittings. The choice comes down to four things: available space, frequency of use, visibility into the wardrobe and budget.
When to choose sliding
- The room is under 10 feet wide — sliding doors do not need clearance in front.
- You want a clean, wall-length look — sliding doors look seamless and can integrate mirrors.
- Two people will use the wardrobe simultaneously — each panel slides independently.
- You value low maintenance — modern aluminium track systems last 15+ years with zero lubrication.
When to choose hinged
- You want full visibility — open both doors and see everything at once.
- The room is large enough — you need at least 2.5 ft of clearance in front of each door.
- Budget is tighter — hinged mechanisms are significantly cheaper than quality sliding track systems.
- You want more internal organisation — hinged doors can carry pockets, hooks and mirror inserts without adding weight to a track.
Cost comparison (Vadodara rates, 2025)
- Hinged wardrobe, laminate shutters: ₹900–₹1,400 per sqft of shuttered area
- Sliding wardrobe, laminate shutters: ₹1,100–₹1,800 per sqft (track system adds cost)
- Sliding wardrobe, mirror shutters: ₹1,400–₹2,200 per sqft
The hybrid option
For a walk-in wardrobe or a large master bedroom, we often design a combination: sliding panels for the main hang-and-fold section, and a hinged door on the end for the accessories section where you want full visibility. This gives the best of both worlds.
The best wardrobe is the one you actually use. We always ask clients how they dress in the morning before recommending a layout — the answer changes the design every time.
